Marine interns: Grace King

Tell us a about your background?

In Summer 2023, I graduated form the University of Plymouth with a BSc in Marine Biology. During my time at university, I was able to focus many of my projects on renewable energy, especially my dissertation which focused on how the increase in the number of offshore wind farms can influence the connectivity of marine systems.

What are you currently working on during your internship?

Working in the marine data and insights team has provided me the opportunity to undertake several research projects including a habitat restoration project, a floating solar meta-analysis project and an insight series which provides monthly insights into the world of marine data, which can be found on the Marine Data Exchange. Additionally, I am leading a tidal stream evidence project that has been contracted out to ABPmer.

What is a typical day for you?

Every day is different! Aside from the main projects I have been working on, I have been able to attend several conferences and got the chance to hear about some of the amazing research happening in the marine industry. Recently, I had the opportunity to organise The Underwater Photographer of the Year Awards Ceremony which provided me with experience to develop my teamwork and leadership skills.

What do you enjoy the most about The Crown Estate?

Working at The Crown Estate has given me the opportunity to participate on research projects which provide vital data and evidence that can help to fill current evidence gaps. As we strive towards net zero and our seabed becomes more congested, it is vital we take a holistic approach when managing the seabed, and generating this connected evidence base plays a large part in this.

How has The Crown Estate helped you in your career development?

Since my A-levels and throughout University, I knew I wanted pursue a career in the marine renewable energy industry, particularly marine planning. The Crown Estate has been a fantastic first step into this industry and has enabled me to explore and try out the different areas within the marine team.

How has this internship shaped your skills and prepared you for future work?

Through managing several research projects, coordinating events and engaging with other individuals in industry at conferences, I have been able to develop time management, communication and analytical skills which will all be utilised in future roles.

What are some of your hobbies outside of work?

Whenever I get the opportunity to I enjoy scuba diving, snorkelling and paddleboarding. On a normal weekend, I enjoy walking my dog/going for a run, cooking good food and spending quality time with my family and friends.
