Marine interns: Harry Richardson

Tell us about your background?

I was a Marine Research Intern at The Crown Estate, having graduated from the University of Southampton in the summer of 2023 with a master's degree in Marine Biology with Oceanography. Prior to this internship, I gained experience through multiple other internships including with the Carbon Disclosure Project and Nature Alpha. These experiences have instilled in me a mindset that favours a data-driven approach to problem-solving.

What are you currently working on during your internship?

During my internship, I worked in the Planning and Technical team in The Crown Estate’s London office. My role revolves around managing the Marine Data Exchange, which supports the energy transition in the UK towards offshore wind farms. This involves supporting offshore wind developers in uploading data to the Marine Data Exchange as part of their leasing obligations. It was my role to ensure the accurate and timely exchange of crucial data, which is essential for effective planning and implementation of offshore wind projects.

What is a typical day for you?

A typical day for me involved a variety of tasks, including communicating with offshore wind developers to assist them in fulfilling their data uploading obligations. I also engaged in broader activities within the Planning and Technical team, which provided me with exposure to different aspects of the energy transition and allowed me to interact with colleagues from various teams.

What do you enjoy the most about The Crown Estate?

What I enjoy most about The Crown Estate is the opportunity it provided to work on meaningful projects that contribute to the advancement of the UK’s energy transition. The collaborative environment and the chance to interact with professionals from diverse backgrounds are also aspects that I value.

How has The Crown Estate helped you in your career development?

The Crown Estate has been instrumental in my career development by offering me the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the field of marine data and renewable energy. Through this internship, I have been able to enhance both my soft and hard skills, which will undoubtedly benefit me in future roles within this field.

How has this internship shaped your skills and prepared you for future work?

This internship has provided me with invaluable practical experience in managing data exchange platforms and navigating the complexities of the energy transition sector. It has sharpened my communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills, preparing me for future roles where these abilities will be highly sought after.

What are some of your hobbies outside of work?

Having grown up in the countryside of Northumberland I enjoy hiking, running, and camping. I try to get away to the Lake District any time I can and anytime the weather permits to get a bit of out outdoor treatment. Now in London this has been replaced by playing tennis, padel, and squash with the occasional park run.
